In the Trent Valley, 25 minutes from Nottingham

The Reindeer sits on the main street of Hoveringham, a village in the Trent Valley between Nottingham and Newark. The A612 takes you straight there from the city. No motorway, no roundabout retail parks. Just the river valley opening out into countryside.

The terrace is at the back, looking directly onto the village cricket ground. It is the kind of view that is increasingly rare within easy reach of a city, and it is the reason people come back.

A pub with a kitchen that takes food seriously

The difference between a gastropub and a pub that does food is the kitchen. The Reindeer is run by Billy Mantle, a professional chef who spent years cooking in serious restaurant kitchens before taking on this pub.

The suppliers are named on the menu because they earn it. Beef from Dunwood Farms in Staffordshire. Chicken from Packington Farms. The menu changes around the season and around what is worth cooking, not around what is convenient to stock.

The Reindeer exists for one reason: to serve the very best produce we can get our hands on. Great ingredients have a story behind them: the people who raise them, grow them and care for them. Our responsibility is to honour that work by cooking with skill, restraint and attention to detail.

Simple in principle. Uncompromising in execution.

The Food

What you will eat at The Reindeer

The à la carte changes regularly. Expect seasonal British cooking with the kind of technique that comes from a kitchen that has cooked at a high level. Precise and considered, not elaborate for its own sake.

Sunday is its own thing. The Sunday roast runs every week from 12 to 6, and it is the meal the pub was built around. Dry-aged beef, pork belly, corn-fed chicken, roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. Two courses £33. Three courses £39.

The terrace also runs SHIO, a separate Asian street food concept from the same kitchen, Thursday to Sunday. Korean fried chicken, glazed skewers, seasonal specials. Eat outside, drink in the sun.
